In Ms. Alter's painting class, we have a student who is nearly always absent, in which Ms. Alter explained was due to the fact that this student has a rough at home lifestyle, where she helps provide for her family and does not live in the Fort Collins area. Due to Ms. Alters creating strong relationships, and having this student prior to this semester, she is aware of this student's reasons for being absent, especially since it is a first period, elective class, she knows it is not something this student needs to graduate. Of the two times she has been present in the class, I have noticed accomodations being made for her, in which Ms Alter allows her opportunities to get work done at home and contact her through email. However, the student is still not in a comfortable grade stance, Ms Alter still provides a welcoming and trusting point of view for this student and is open to understanding the constraints that may exist due to at-home struggles.
In Mrs. Lanterman's class, a student recently became injured and as a result, is struggling to manage his time properly in class due to the fact that he cannot physically do the work. In the critique that I taught, I modified the lesson for him by allowing him to pair up with my coteacher, Nicole, to do the assignment, which was a written critique. In this, he was still able to be fully engaged and participate by providing his answers for Nicole verbally for her to write down for him. The thought and critique process was still fully engaging regardless of his constraint due to his injury.
