KINDERGARTEN
AFRICAN ADINKRA FIBERS |
Third grade explored fibers art through the processes of felting and adding embellishments through stitching and needle felting. Emphasizing abstract art, students learned about how artists choose color palettes for their art. By learning about color theory, such as primary, analogous, and complementary colors, students were able to choose backgrounds for their abstract felting. Then they considered basic elements of design in constructing their abstractions (shape, color, line, pattern, etc) by adding embellishments.

Second grade put themselves in the shoes of a butterfly or bug to discover a new perspective or point of view of nature and flowers. With inspiration stemming from Georgia O'Keeffe, the students were introduced to art concepts of abstraction, perspective, color, enlargement, and observation. Using artificial flowers as physical objects to explore, the students created observational studies emphasizing the shapes, lines, and colors they saw.

Kindergarten was introduced to combining printmaking techniques with fibers in a lesson inspired by African adinkra clothing. by emphasizing color and pattern. By using multiple tools to print shapes and marks into muslin cloth, students created their own designs and patterns, including patterns within the color strips.
