During mid-June to mid-July of Summer 2015, I was privileged to experience many visual arts and art education opportunities at various schools in QwaQwa and Harrismith, South Africa with the Education Abroad program: Hearts, Heads, and Hands: CSU Meets Africa Through Art. This six week (4 weeks in country) program focused on “the Arts of Africa through the study of artistic methods and techniques, cultural context and global significance” (csumeetsafrica.wordpress.com). My colleagues and I endured extensive experiences gaining an understanding of the visual arts of Africa, as well as, in-class teaching opportunities in a variety of schools introducing various studio art methods and techniques (Elementary through High school), art history and museum studies (particularly with the Batlokwa sacred site), and an understanding of the integration of Art and Arts Entrepreneurship in the city of QwaQwa.
